Five-Year-Old Teams with Her Grandfather to Write
a Children’s Book Dealing with Childhood Allergies

The Fox Who Sneezed Shows How Storytelling Uncovers the Hidden Code of Love That Binds Parents, Children and Grandparents!

A fox has laid a trap for three little pigs. Fortunately for the pigs, a very nice old couple with a secret from a magic giraffe was nearby and could help…But how will the fox’s allergies affect them all?  So begins a unique fairy tale inspired by a five year-old’s imagination and put together with the help of her grandfather.

The Fox Who Sneezed: Can You Guess What Came Out? is a charming fable inspired by five-year-old Elle Valentina Dubois’s friends with peanut allergies and offers them an adventure story.  The additional charm of the book is the collaboration: Elle wrote it with her grandfather, entrepreneur and businessman, Steve Kelley. Together, they formed a truly special generational bridge that will foster imagination and relationship building among other extended families. The Fox Who Sneezed also offers all readers a guide to write their own family stories.

“I told the story from my imagination, Elle continued. “Each time we took a break from the story, which could be a day, a week, or a month, we’d restart by Grampa reading me everything we’d written so far. Then we’d think together about what the story was, what the characters were doing, and how to tell the story, and then we’d write some more.”

Elle and her grandfather made the book interactive by adding some chants and rhymes that kids can sing with their parents or grandparents, whoever reads the book with them or just by themselves.  The authors also encourage all the children who read it to write their own stories.

“My Grampa told me that a long time ago, when months were moons, and mice were ooze, and dogs were dinner, he learned to tell stories from a storyteller named Ed. I think Ed was very smart, and very good at telling stories, and Grampa is too,” says Elle. “I’ve listened to the singing sounds, and imagined the faraway places, and seen the crazy characters of those stories since I was born. As anyone who knows me can say, those stories lit a ‘talking fire’ in me. After hearing oodles of Grampa’s stories, one day I decided to tell my own stories to Grampa. He liked my stories, and kept asking for more stories, and asked me if I’d like to write this story down.”

About the Authors: Grampa Steve and Elle shared a family tradition of storytelling ever since Elle was born – and when Elle was five, she wanted to tell a story of her own. Between then and now, The Fox Who Sneezed has gone through many revisions and re-imaginings, as Elle learned more about being a storyteller, with Grampa Steve’s enthusiastic coaching and participation. Their journey evolved into a treasured experience for the whole family, and they hope you will be inspired to spark your children’s imagination, share stories, and write a book of your own!

“There’s no such thing as bad publicity.”
